The Onion, Michael Ian Black, BuzzFeed, HowAboutWe, Hashable among winning panelists; nearly 10,000 votes cast in crowd-sourced competition


New York, NY (May 09, 2011) - Leaders from New York City’s most buzzed-about digital companies, including The Onion, Michael Ian Black’s Witstream, Buzzfeed, BBDO, HowAboutWe, Adkeeper, Fashism, and Hashable, are among the winners selected by the public and a panel of expert judges to appear on Internet Week New York’s main stage this June 6 – 13.

Now in its fourth year, Internet Week New York is expected to draw over 20,000 people to more than 200 events held at Internet Week’s headquarters and venues across the city. Living up to its reputation as the ultimate crowd-sourced festival, the first-ever Make The Stage competition opened up the festival even further by inviting the public to submit panel ideas and vote on its favorites. Nearly 250 proposals were submitted and close to 10,000 votes were cast.

The winning panels cover a diverse mix of Internet trends and topics – from hyper-localization and mobile commerce to whether it is possible to buy viral success or fix online advertising to how to build a successful start-up or Web video series.

“The winning panels present a clear bellwether of what topics will be hotly debated and discussed throughout Internet Week New York 2011” said David-Michel Davies, Chairman, Internet Week New York. “The public and our guest judges clearly zeroed in on presentations that highlight and analyze current trends and forecast the next big thing”

Winners were selected in six categories—Startups, Social Media, Technology, Advertising & Creativity, Entertainment, Mobile. Two entrants in each category were awarded a one hour slot on Internet Week New York’s main stage, one chosen by the public and the other by a team of experts, which included Alex Blagg (A Bajillion Hits), Josh Harris (The Wired City), Suroosh Alvi (Vice), Jared Hecht (GroupMe), Soraya Darabi (Foodspotting), Ashley Granata (Fashism), Kris Kiger (R/GA), Sean Mills (Nerve.com), Charlie O’Donnell (First Round Capital), Anthony DeRosa (Reuters Media) and Scott Belsky (Behance).

Dubbed “seven days of Web geekery” by the Wall Street Journal, Internet Week New York has earned comparisons to everything from SXSW (by CNET) to Fashion Week (by The Economist).

The festival is sponsored by Yahoo! and presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences and The Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment
