Crain Communications today announced a strategic investment in Internet Week New York, the Big Apple’s week-long festival celebrating Internet business and culture. Founded in 2008 in cooperation with the City of New York, Internet Week NY has become the world’s largest crowd-sourced Internet festival, drawing nearly 40,000 people in 2012 to more than 250 events taking place throughout New York City. Yahoo! IAC, Buddy Media, Microsoft, Time Inc., Vice and The Webby Awards are among the dozens of top-tier Internet organizations that participate in the festival annually.
Under the agreement, Crain Communications and the Internet Week NY team, led by co-founders David-Michel Davies and Neil Vogel, will grow the festival under a shared vision, with Crain Communications taking the reins of day-to-day management. In addition to building on the festival’s high-energy spirit and track record for showcasing the latest ideas, trends, and technology reshaping business and culture, Crain will leverage its strong editorial heritage and media expertise to add a robust offering of premium programming and content to the festival’s lineup. “For five years we’ve supported and worked closely with New York’s thriving Internet community to create the world’s largest crowd-sourced Internet festival,” said Davies and Vogel, co-founders of Internet Week NY. “We’re thrilled and proud to partner with Crain, an organization with a deep and storied editorial history, to grow and further build the community and festival.” Rance Crain, president, Crain Communications commented on the investment, “The internet and technology have created disruption and opportunities in every area of business, including several verticals core to Crain Communications. We view this as an opportunity to build upon an incredible foundation and apply our expertise of curating and creating content and insights that define the issues and move businesses forward.”
“New York City has emerged as one of the world’s leading digital cities with an industry that employs 120,000 New Yorkers,” said Commissioner Katherine Oliver, Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. “We’ve seen remarkable growth in this industry, and we look forward to working with Crain Communications and the Internet Week NY team to highlight this thriving sector.” Internet Week NY will take place in New York City in May of 2013.
